The 2008 London Jazz Festival
Date: Festival
Location: London
Bucks is well represented at this year's London Jazz Festival, which runs from Friday the 14th to Sunday the 23rd of November.
Cleo and John in the Snow
It would be rude not to begin with Cleo Laine & John Dankworth who will be performing on four consecutive nights at Ronnie Scott's from the 19th to 22nd. Rightly described as Britain's jazz aristocracy, the husband and wife team, recently honoured with a special Gold Award at the BBC Jazz Awards, showcase their incredible vocal and musical talents in what promises to be a warm and wonderful quartet of nights.
Matthew Herbert: 'There's Me And There's You'
Over at the Royal Festival Hall on the 21st, it's a Bucks double-bill as Matthew Herbert brings his Big Band to the London stage once again to showcase his new album 'There's Me And There's You', and in support is Brownswood recording artist Jose James, blending urban blues, hip-hop, soul and drum + bass, into his jazz based sound.
The following night, and still at the Royal Festival Hall, there's more from the Brownswood camp as Jules Buckley leads his Heritage Orchestra out on to the stage for a special collaboration with The Bays.
Finn Peters
And venture away from central London to Bucks' heartland and you will find Finn Peters (newly signed to Matthew Herbert's Accidental Records) and his band performing at the Notting Hill Arts Club.
Led Bib Flyer
Finally The Orchestra Pit (whose publishing arm - Vacilando '68 Publishing Co. - Bucks represents) will be presenting a show at The Arts Theatre Cafe in Soho featuring abrasive, sax led new jazz from Led Bib, Loop Collective outfit Outhouse spinning jazz with experimental sounds, and Paul Taylor aka Trombone Poetry mixing stand-up poetry and jazz.
Full details of all the events can be found at http://www.londonjazzfestival.org.uk.
And the music doesn't end there, as the weekend after the Jazz Festival wraps up we have the first TWO THIRTEEN: Thirsty Fish Festival taking over Cafe Oto in Dalston. Vacilando '68 composer John Bisset is curating this unique event, a celebration of music, art and film. There will be nightly performances by different pianists of John's 'Mindfulness of pianoplaying', as well as nightly screenings of films each lasting 2'13" from international filmmakers, and many other performers from the London improv scene and beyond.
