Biography

Jonathan Goldstein is an award-winning composer for film, television, theatre, advertising and live events. His work encompasses contemporary classical styles with orchestral, jazz, electro-acoustic & world influences.

After studying Music in the UK, gaining a first-class honours degree in composition & performance from Birmingham University, Goldstein began his career composing extensively for the Royal National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, working with Sir Trevor Nunn, Sir Peter Hall, Bill Alexander & Ian Judge. Credits include Nunn’s celebrated RSC stage & screen production of Othello, starring Sir Ian McKellen, Zoe Wanamaker, Imogen Stubbs & Willard White, and King Lear, starring Corin Redgrave.

Also in his early career, he assisted the film music orchestrator Christopher Palmer on the soundtrack orchestrations for Cape Fear, directed by Martin Scorcese, and landmark re-recordings of classic film scores including Taxi Driver, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Elmer Bernstein. He has since scored numerous shorts including the BAFTA-nominated Candy Bar Kid, and recently, Little Cracker, written by Meera Syal and directed by Peter Lydon.

In advertising, Goldstein has worked extensively for leading agencies in the UK and USA including Saatchi & Saatchi, M&C Saatchi, Ogilvy, McCann-Erickson, Publicis, Euro RSCG, Leo Burnett, DDB UK, CHI & Partners, Lowe, MCBD and WCRS, composing music for television and cinema commercials on behalf of many important brands. These include American Airlines, American Express, BMW, Ford, Intel, Kronenbourg, Lexus, Nokia, Sony, T-Mobile, Toyota, UBS AG, VISA, Volkswagen & Zurich. Recent credits include Sky, Natwest, IG Index & Tesco.

For his creative contributions to the advertising industry, Goldstein has won a D&AD for Outstanding Use of Music, an IVCA Award for Best Music and two BTA Craft Awards for Best Original Music, as well as receiving nominations for two further BTA Craft awards.

In television, Goldstein was nominated for an Ivor Novello Award in 2007 for his score for the BBC/HBO film, Primo, starring Sir Anthony Sher, directed by Richard Wilson OBE.

He has also composed, produced and conducted his own music for major events including: Bentley, Microsoft, British Telecom, Madame Tussaud and Shanghai World Expo 2010.

His classical work Circles, performed by Music Projects London, was premiered at St John’s Smith Square, London, conducted by Richard Bernas.

Goldstein has recently recorded his debut classical album, performed by the Balanescu String Quartet and ensemble, featuring the internationally renowned violinist Alexander Balanescu, with James Pearson, eminent pianist (Hallé, Philharmonia, BBC Concert Orchestra) and Artistic Director of Ronnie Scott‘s, London.

He is Chairman of PCAM, the Society for Producers and Composers of Applied Music.
