The fifth episode in Soumik Datta's SILENT SPACES is out now! The episode is set in the windswept town of Gateshead in North East England, celebrating the resilience of a part of the country that is still suffering from losing its industries during the pandemic. Standing tall and rooted deeply in the North is the iconic cultural centre - Sage, Gateshead, where the action unfolds.
An homage to the people, their fight for hope, championing the differently able as well as diverse immigrant communities of the region, ‘Angel Wings’ was composed and written by Soumik Datta. The chorus alludes to the region’s mining history, the invention of the electric bulb (in Gateshead by Sir Joseph Swan) and Antony Gormley’s iconic ‘Angel of the North’ - a beacon of hope and renewal.
Starring Newcastle based musicians folk rock singer Ruth Patterson and prolific keys player Calum Howard on piano, Soumik supports on backing vocals and sarod.
Souvid Datta’s film follows the journeys of two North East based dancers, Lila Naruse and Benedicta Valentina reuniting to discover the joy of dance again after a prolonged period of pandemic isolation and stillness.
SILENT SPACES is an original series of 6 episodes directed by Souvid Datta and produced by Soumik Datta Arts, breaking the silence of iconic venues, closed nightclubs and empty museums that were out of action during the COVID-19 pandemic.
