Nigel Hess, Chameleon's creator and the composer/arranger of most of the music on the album, is one of the most distinguished musicians currently working in the fields of television, theatre and film. After reading music at Cambridge he became Company Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and was awarded the New York Drama Desk award for Outstanding Music in a Play for the productions of Much Ado About Nothing and Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway.
Nigel has composed numerous scores for both American and British television productions, and is the recipient of two Ivor Novello awards, a Television & Radio Industries Club award, and two nominations from the Royal Television Society.
Recent film projects include Ladies in Lavender, starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, performed by violin virtuoso Joshua Bell with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and nominated for a Classical Brits award. Nigel has recently completed work on the second series of the highly successful BBC drama series New Tricks, and is currently working on a film project called Food of Love, developed from a live concert starring Judi Dench and Patrick Stewart. The Willow Song (track 10 on the Chameleon CD) will eventually feature as part of the new score.
The lead singer with Chameleon and a key player in making the album such a great success is the distinguished soprano Olive Simpson, who started out as first soprano with The Swingle Singers, performing and recording music ranging from big band to avant-garde, and premiering operas by Berio in Florence and Milan. She is the soprano soloist on Pierre Boulez?s definitive recording of Berio's Sinfonia.
Olive now sings and records regularly with The Deller Consort, The King's Consort, The Sixteen, Synergy Vocals and Chameleon. Recent solo engagements have included Purcell's King Arthur, Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, Bach's St. John Passion, Handel's Samson, and John Adams's Grand Pianola Music, conducted by the composer. Olive is also increasingly in demand as a teacher and recording producer, and has devised and presented a two-hour special on life as a singer for the BBC Radio 2 Arts Programme.
