British composer and musician David Julyan emerged working on the early shorts (Doodlebug) and first feature (Following) from visionary director, writer, producer Christopher Nolan, leading to David working on Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough, the Oscar nominated Memento starring Guy Pearce, and then Insomnia, staring Al Pachino and Robin Williams, and The Prestige, also Oscar nominated and with a cast including Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Caine.
David had begun to focus his interests in music, sound design and building his own synthesiser circuits whilst studying Astronomy & Physics at University College London. He started to compose music for the short films of fellow members of the University Film Society, one of those early filmmakers being Christopher Nolan.
Further scores have included The Descent by Neil Marshall, featuring dramatic use of orchestra and choir, and winning much admiration from focusing on the emotional core of the film rather than the horror. Also, Oscar nominee Drew Goddard’s The Cabin In The Woods and Hidden for The Duffer Brothers.
In recent years David has made his first artist releases outside of his film work; his solo album Hireth in 2023, and The Orrery with Iskra Strings in 2025.
Written for piano, string quartet & analog synths, Hireth sits somewhere within the worlds of post-classical, electronic and ambient music, and gave David the opportunity to explore the world of live performance; the album along with new arrangements of film scores and has been performed at Daylight Music, Counter Chamber and Sonic Wave.
David’s score to Memento will soon be receiving a long awaited vinyl release on Enjoy The Ride Records.
Further, David has provided arrangements for bands as diverse as Coldcut and A Winged Victory for the Sullen.
