NADINE SHAH is a Mercury Prize - nominated songwriter and musician from the north east of England and of Pakistani / Norwegian heritage - with now 5 albums under her belt, all of which deal with some of the most difficult subjects of our times.
Her debut album LOVE YOUR DUM AND MAD (2013) received much attention not only for its musical originality (and her unique voice) but for shining a light on mental health issues whilst drawing on intensely personal experiences.
FAST FOOD ( 2015) found her looking inward and exploring the complexities of difficult personal relationships whilst HOLIDAY DESTINATION (2018) found her speaking out about right wing nationalism, Conservatism and the plight of refugees. The critically acclaimed song OUT THE WAY from this album - a war cry to her own experience of racism and displacement - is sadly one that still resonates today.
Her ‘lock-down’ album KITCHEN SINK (2020) was firmly routed in the claustrophobic world of domesticity and explores female societal tropes and expectations. Her latest work - the triumphant FILTHY UNDERNEATH (2024) - delves into themes of her own mental health crisis and subsequent ongoing recovery.
Nadine's unique and powerful voice has been much sought after and seen her collaborate and perform with the likes of with Depeche Mode, Portishead, Suede, Patti Smith, Elbow, Mogwai, ParaOrchestra, Vivienne Westwood, John Cale, Young Fathers and many others.
As a presenter she worked with the Q Awards, the AIM Awards, and on programmes for 6 music and BBC sounds / Radio 4. As an actress she also recently toured with Shakespeare Theatre North playing the part of Titania in a lauded production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. During the Covid lockdown, she originated an Instagram Stories series PAYBACK interviewing and probing into the trials of music journalists (at the same time collecting an excellent stash of rock and roll stories! )
Along side her truly original singing voice, Nadine is no stranger to using it to speak up for causes she believes strongly in, whether it be calling for greater transparency in the world of streaming or campaigning for a ceasefire in the Israeli / Gaza conflict and promoting mental health awareness.
She is currently working on a book - a memoir - due out in April 2025.
